La Visa de Trabajo y Vacaciones (Subclase 462) es para jóvenes desde los 18 a los 30 años que desean viajar y trabajar hasta 12 meses en Australia. Esta visa le permite suplementar el costo de sus vacaciones mediante períodos de empleo temporal o informal.

El programa de Visa de Trabajo y Vacaciones ha sido diseñado para promover el intercambio cultural y estrechar los lazos entre países con los cuáles Australia ha establecido un acuerdo.

Esta visa es para personas de Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Malasia, Tailandia, Turquía y los Estados Unidos de América.

Actualmente existe un límite anual de 1500 visas de Trabajo y Vacaciones disponibles para ciudadanos de Chile.
 

¿Qué me permite hacer esta visa?

Si a usted se le otorga una visa de Trabajo y Vacaciones puede:

• entrar a Australia en cualquier momento dentro de los 12 meses posteriores a la fecha de otorgamiento de la visa

• permanecer en Australia hasta 12 meses a partir de la fecha de su primera entrada

• salir de Australia y entrar nuevamente las veces que desee, dentro de los doce meses siguientes a la fecha de su primer ingreso

• trabajar en forma temporal en Australia, hasta seis meses con cada empleador

• estudiar hasta cuatro meses.

¿Cuáles son los requisitos de salud?

Como ciudadano chileno, normalmente no es necesario que se realice un examen médico, a menos que haya pasado más de 3 meses consecutivos en otro país en los últimos 5 años o si “special significance (especial importancia)” aplica en su caso. Por favor verifique aquí.

¿Cómo postulo?

Los ciudadanos chilenos deben presentar su postulación personalmente o por servicio de courier en la Embajada de Australia en Santiago.

Si usted es ciudadano chileno y se encuentra en otro país que no sea Australia, debe enviar su solicitud de visa de trabajo y vacaciones a la Sección de Inmigración de la Embajada de Australia en Santiago, Chile.

About the Visa

The Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa is for young people aged 18 to 30 who want to travel and work for up to 12 months in Australia. This visa allows you to supplement the cost of your holiday through periods of temporary or casual employment.

What does the visa let me do?

If you are granted a Work and Holiday visa you can:

• enter Australia at any time within 12 months of the visa grant date
• stay in Australia for up to 12 months from the date of first entry
• leave and re-enter Australia any number of times from the 12 months from the date of first entry
• undertake temporary employment in Australia for up to six months with each employer
• study for up to four months.

How much will this visa cost?

You must pay a non-refundable visa application charge when you lodge your visa application. Current charges are available on the department's website.

How does this visa work?

The purpose of this visa is for you to holiday and travel in Australia. Any work should be temporary to supplement your funds. Periods of work should be broken up by periods of holiday and travel.

Working

Work and Holiday visa holders are allowed to undertake any type of work on a temporary basis. You are allowed to work for up to six months with each employer.

Working beyond six months with the same employer, without the required permission, may result in your visa being cancelled and you may be required to leave Australia.
Note: It is not possible to qualify for an additional Work and Holiday visa by working in regional Australia. This option is only available under the Working Holiday visa.

Studying

While in Australia as the holder of a Work and Holiday visa you may study or train for up to four months. If you want to study for longer than four months, you should apply for a student visa from outside Australia.

Visa validity period

If granted a Work and Holiday visa you have 12 months from the grant date to enter Australia. The visa is valid for 12 months from the date you first enter Australia.
Note: If you leave Australia during your 12 month stay, you cannot recover the period of time spent outside Australia.

Accompanying family

You cannot include family members in your application for this visa. If your partner wants to accompany you to Australia, they may do so, but will need to apply for their own visa.

It is not possible for you to travel to Australia on a Work and Holiday visa with children. If you want to travel to Australia with children, you should apply for a different kind of visa.

Annual visa limit

The annual limit on the number of Work and Holiday visas granted to applicants from Chile is 1500. The annual limit is based on the Australian financial year (1 July to 30 June).

Extending your stay in Australia

The Work and Holiday visa allows you to stay in Australia for 12 months. You can only extend your stay in Australia if your Work and Holiday visa is not granted with a 'No Further Stay' condition. If your visa is granted with a 'No Further Stay' condition you will be advised of this in your visa grant letter.

Work and Holiday visa holders without a 'No Further Stay' condition are only able to apply for a limited number of other visas from within Australia.
Example: It is not possible for Work and Holiday visa holders to apply for most skilled and student visas from within Australia. Please contact the department for further information.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for this visa if you:

• are aged 18 to 30 years (inclusive) on the date you apply
• hold a Chilean passport
• meet educational requirements
• have functional English
• have a letter of support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
• do not have dependent children
• have not previously entered Australia on a Working Holiday (417) or Work and Holiday (462) visa
• meet character, health and evidence of funds requirements.

Education requirements

You must hold tertiary qualifications or have completed or have been approved to undertake a third year of undergraduate university study.

Tertiary qualifications include the following:

• Doctoral degree
• Masters degree
• Graduate diploma
• Graduate certificate
• Bachelor degree
• Associate degree
• Advanced diploma
• Diploma level qualifications.

Note: Tertiary qualifications do not include the following:

• Certificate IV
• Certificate III
• Certificate II
• Certificate I
• senior secondary school level qualifications.

Functional English requirements

You must have functional English and provide documentary evidence of your English level when you lodge your visa application. Otherwise, you may be refused the visa.

You must provide evidence that you have done one of the following:

• Achieved an IELTS average band score of at least 4.5 based on the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening in a test conducted no more than two years before lodging the visa application. For visa purposes you only need to sit the General Training Module.
• Achieved a TOEFL score of 133 on a computer based test, or 450 on a paper based test or 45-46 on an internet-based test, no more than two years before lodging the visa application.
• Passed the Occupational English Test no more than two years before lodging the visa application.
• Completed all years of primary education and at least three years of secondary education at an educational institution in which all instruction was in English.
• Completed at least five years of secondary education (high school) at an educational institution in which all instruction was in English.
• Completed a post-secondary qualification that required at least two years of full-time study or training, in which all tuition was in English.
• Successfully completed, in Australia, at least one year of full-time study or equivalent part-time study towards a degree, higher degree, diploma or associate diploma at an institution or institutions where all the instruction was in English.

Government support

You must include a letter of support from your home government with your application.

This letter is issued by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dependent children

Applicants for this visa must not be accompanied by dependent children.

It is not possible for you to travel to Australia on a Work and Holiday visa with children. If you want to travel to Australia with children, you should apply for a different kind of visa.

Evidence of funds

You must have access to sufficient funds to support yourself for the initial stage of your holiday. Generally, AUD5000 may be regarded as sufficient, but the amount may vary depending on your length of stay and the extent of your travel. You should also have a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia.

Health requirements

Health requirements will vary depending on your personal circumstances.

You may need to have a medical examination depending on:

• your length of stay in Australia
• other health risks in your home country or countries you have visited for more than three months within the last five years
• the activities you will be undertaking
• any existing health condition.

Note: If you intend to work in the health care industry you must undergo HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C testing.

Health insurance

Medical treatment in Australia can be very expensive. As a tourist, you are not covered by Australia's national health scheme, unless there is a reciprocal health care agreement between Australia and your country. Health care for visitors to Australia is explained on the Medicare Australia website.

Australian Values Statement

If you are aged 18 years or over, you must declare that you will respect Australian values and obey the laws of Australia. For this visa, the values statement is included in the general declaration section of the application form. When you sign the application form it means you will also be signing the values statement. You will not be required to have read the Life in Australia book, but may do so if you wish.

You are also encouraged to gain an understanding of Australia, its people and their way of life, before applying for this visa.

Obligations

Entering Australia

You must activate your visa by entering Australia within 12 months of your visa being granted. Failure to activate your visa within this period will result in the visa ceasing. If your visa ceases and you still wish to travel to Australia under the Work and Holiday program, you will need to reapply.

Visa conditions

You must comply with all your visa conditions while in Australia on a Work and Holiday visa. In addition to the work and study limitations, additional visa conditions may be imposed on your Work and Holiday visa. These will be specified in your visa grant notice. A breach of any of these conditions may result in your visa being cancelled and you may have to leave Australia.

Studying

While in Australia on a Work and Holiday visa, you must not study or train for more than four months. If you want to study for longer than four months, you should apply for a student visa from outside Australia.

Working

While in Australia on a Work and Holiday visa, you must not be employed with any one employer for more than six months.

The 'employer' is the business or organisation for which you are working directly.

You are allowed to work with each employer for up to six months and cannot work for longer than six months in the same position, in the same location, doing the same work. The six month work limitation applies to full-time, part-time, casual or shift work.

If you are referred by an agency or labour supplier to a business, you can work for six months for that business. The same agency or labour supplier can refer you to another business where you can work for another six months.

You cannot stay in the same job beyond six months by using different employment agencies, business affiliates or sub-contracting arrangements.

Extending the work period

In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to extend the period of work with one employer to longer than six months. An extension may be allowed for a very short period of time and only if there is sufficient justification to grant it.

Exceptional circumstances must be extraordinary and unforeseeable and must affect an Australian permanent resident, citizen or business.

Exceptional circumstances might include remaining in your current job:

• for a very short time (days or weeks) as you are critical to the completion of a specialised project that has unexpectedly gone over time. This generally only relates to highly skilled activities
  Example: A lawyer in the middle of a trial.

Exceptional circumstances do not include remaining in your current job because you:

• have the required skills or because of labour shortages
• are not able to apply for another kind of visa.

Submit your completed form ’Request permission to work with an employer beyond six months on a Working Holiday or Work and Holiday visa’ to the department, at least two weeks before the expiry of the six month employment limitation.

If you intend to obtain a new passport you should do so before applying for your Work and Holiday visa.

Your visa is linked to the passport number you used in your application and you must use the same passport to travel to Australia.

If you obtain a new passport after applying for your Work and Holiday visa you must advise the department of the new details before you travel to Australia. Otherwise, you may experience significant delays at the airport and could be denied permission to board your plane.

You must not make arrangements to travel to Australia until you are advised that your visa has been granted.

Your visa is linked to the passport number you used in your application and you must use the same passport to travel to Australia.

If you do obtain a new passport, you must advise the department of the new passport details before you travel to Australia. Otherwise, you may experience significant delays at the airport and could be denied permission to board your plane. When advising us about the new passport information, please provide the reason why you obtained a new passport and a scanned copy of the new passport's photograph page.

If this is not possible, or you are uncertain about which pages to scan, you will need to provide us with the following information as it is shown in your new passport:

• name
• date of birth
• passport number
• issue date of the new passport
• expiry date of the new passport
• country of issue
• issuing authority/place of issue.

Activating your Work and Holiday visa

Your 12 month visa stay period starts when you enter Australia. This includes entering Australia as a transit passenger, on an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), Crew Travel Authority (CTA), or a Maritime Crew Visa (MCV). When you have started the stay period on your Work and Holiday visa, it cannot be delayed or deferred.

If you do not want to start your 12 month stay on your Work and Holiday visa, and you plan to transit through Australia or enter on an ETA, CTA or MCV, you should consider cancelling your Work and Holiday visa. What is the Work and Holiday Visa?

The Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa is for you if you are: 
• a Chilean national; 
• tertiary educated; 
• aged between 18 and 30; 
• interested in working and taking a holiday of up to 12 months in Australia. 

This visa allows you to supplement the cost of your holiday through periods of temporary or casual employment. 

What are the conditions of the visa?

If you are granted a Work and Holiday visa, you can: 

• stay in Australia for up to 12 months from the date you first enter Australia; 
• travel in and out of Australia as many times as you wish during your 12 month stay; 
• study or train in Australia for up to a total of 4 months; 
• work in Australia for up to 6 months with each employer. 

Other conditions apply to this visa. You will be informed of these at the time when your visa is granted. 

Am I eligible for this visa?

To be eligible for the Work and Holiday visa you must be a Chilean national who: 
1. holds a valid Chilean passport; 
2. is outside Australia at the time of the lodgement of the visa application; 
3. is at least 18 years old, but has not turned 31; 
4. has no dependent children; 
5. is able to speak English at a functional level; 
6. holds tertiary qualifications (at least three years of study) or has completed or been approved to undertake a third year of undergraduate study (studies must be recognized by the Chilean Government); 
7. has sufficient funds for the first part of his/her stay in Australia (at least 
AUD$ 5000), as well as his/her airfare (roundtrip); 
8. has a letter from the Chilean Foreign Ministry certifying his/her suitability to participate in the visa arrangements; and 
9. meets health requirements if it applies. 

PLEASE NOTE. You should consider carefully whether you meet the requirements of this visa. Once you have lodged your visa application, the visa application charge cannot be refunded, even if the visa is refused, or if you change your mind and no longer wish to travel to Australia. 

What is functional English?

To be granted a Work and Holiday visa, you must be able to communicate in English at a functional level. 

You must provide documentary evidence of your English level when you lodge your visa application. Otherwise, you may be refused the visa. 

Only the following forms of evidence will be considered proof of functional English: 

• An IELTS average band score of at least 4.5 based on the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening in an examination conducted no more than 2 years before lodging the visa application. For visa purposes you only need to sit the General Training Module. 
• A TOEFL score of 133 on a computer based test, or 450 on a paper based test or 45-46 on an internet-based test, undertaken no more than 2 years before lodging the visa application.

• Having successfully completed a post-secondary qualification that required at least 2 years of full-time study or training, in which all tuition was in English. 
• Having successfully completed, in Australia, at least 1 year of full-time study or equivalent part-time study towards a degree, higher degree, diploma or associate diploma at an institution or institutions where all the instruction was conducted in English.

What are the health requirements?

You are not required to undergo a health assessment unless you have spent more than 3 consecutive months in the last 5 years in another country or “special significance” applies. Please check here.

Health insurance 

Medical treatment in Australia can be very expensive. As a tourist, you are not covered by Australia's national health scheme, unless there is a reciprocal health care agreement between Australia and your country. Health care for visitors to Australia is explained on the Medicare Australia website . 

It is strongly recommended that you take out health insurance for the duration of your stay in Australia. You can obtain health insurance through a health insurance provider or travel agent in your country of residence.

How much money do I need to demonstrate ‘sufficient funds’?

You will need to demonstrate evidence of ‘sufficient funds’ for the first part of your stay in Australia, and for your airfare. 

You will therefore need to show that you have access to at least AUD$ 5000 plus additional money for airfare. Airfares to Australia will be considered to cost approximately AUD$ 2500, unless you have evidence of a reservation at a cheaper price. Please remember that if you buy your airfares prior to being granted a visa, you do so at your own risk. 

You can provide the following forms of evidence to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds: 

• bank account statement; 
• letter from a bank or other financial institution (which should be on the bank or financial institution’s letterhead, dated and signed); 

How do I apply for this visa?

You will need to provide the following: 

• a signed and completed Form 1208 ‘Application for a Work and Holiday visa’. 
• a visa application charge (VAC), paid by cash (the exact amount), bank cheque or ‘vale vista’ (made payable to ‘Embajada de Australia’). Personal cheques will not be accepted; 
• a valid passport; 
• two recent passport photos. 

You will also need to provide: 

• a letter of approval issued to you by the Chilean Foreign Ministry (see above for more information); 
• proof of your proficiency in English at a functional level (see above for more information); 
• certified copies of your tertiary qualifications, or a letter from your university confirming your level of study, or originals of academic transcripts (you must have completed at least the first 2 academic years of a career; 
• evidence of funds, equivalent to AUD$ 5000 plus additional funds for airfare; 
• a health assessment if needed. 
• photocopy of your passport (biodata page only) 

How do I lodge the application?

If you are lodging your application in person 

You will need to make an appointment with the Visas and Immigration Section through the Information Service for Australian Visas (ISAV) following the instructions below. Appointments are usually held in the afternoons.

If you are lodging your application through courier 

You will need to send the application (including the completed form, passport, visa application fee and supporting documentation) via courier to this address:

If you are outside Chile 

You will need to lodge your application via courier to the address above. Please note that you can apply from anywhere but MUST NOT be in Australia at the time of your application. 

How long will it take to process my visa application?

If you lodged your complete visa application in person, it will be processed on the spot and the visa might be granted immediately. 

However, please note that the decision to grant the visa immediately is up to the visa officer. The officer may need to request additional information, or your application may have to undergo further processing, which can delay the grant of the visa. The visa officer will advise you at the time of the appointment if your visa cannot be granted immediately. 

If you lodged your complete visa application by courier, it will be evaluated within regular processing times, which is, on average, 10 working days. The officer processing your application may need to request additional information, or your application may have to undergo further processing, which can delay the grant of the visa. 

A complete application is one where you have: 
• lodged a fully completed application form; 
• paid the correct visa fee; 
• provided all supporting documents; and 
• a health assessment if necessary with an authorised doctor.

When should I apply for my visa?

You can apply at any time provided that there are places available. 

Can I buy my plane tickets or make other financial commitments before I am granted the visa?

Until you are actually granted a visa, there is no guarantee that you will receive a visa to travel to Australia. 


If you choose to make any kind of binding financial arrangements (including buying airfares) prior to being granted a visa, you do so at your own risk. 

The fact that you have already purchased airfares to Australia will not be considered in making a decision to grant or refuse the visa.

I don’t meet the criteria for a Work and Holiday visa. Are there any other visa options? 

Yes. If you don’t meet the criteria for the grant of a Work and Holiday visa, you still have other visa options. 

Tourist visa: 
You can travel to Australia as a tourist for between 3 to 6 months, on a subclass 676 Tourist visa. This visa allows you to study for up to 3 months. You cannot work on this visa. Remember that you will need to provide evidence of funds among other requirements. 


Student visa: 
If you intend to study in Australia, and the duration of the course is more than 3 months, you will have to apply for a Student visa. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for the entire period of the course, and also to work for up to 20 hours per week.

Sí. En el caso que usted no cumpla con los requisitos para esta visa, tiene otras opciones. 

Visa de Turismo: 
Usted puede viajar a Australia para una estadía de 3 a 6 meses con una visa de turismo. Esta visa le permite estudiar por hasta 3 meses, pero no le permite trabajar. Recuerde que tendrá que proporcionar evidencia de fondos entre otros requisitos. 


Visa de Estudiante: 
Si desea estudiar en Australia y la duración del curso es de más de 3 meses, usted deberá postular a una visa de estudiante. Esta visa le permite permanecer en Australia por el periodo que dure el curso de estudios y además le permite trabajar hasta 20 horas por semana.
